The Relationship of Government to the Individual and Vice Versa
The government’s relationship with the individual has
proven to be ineffective in further developing our society. The unfortunate
existence of absolutism has seriously limited an individual’s ability to help
improve our nation. Our government has curtailed people’s freedoms in terms of
owning private property and businesses. Most government policies are directed
towards the mercantile class and are not beneficial to lower classes. In
present circumstances, the government is not providing for the security of
property and is determining wages through guilds. In this time of absolutism,
our monarch has been preventing the existence of competition in foreign trade
and has seriously limited what goods can be traded internationally. These
government regulations are in simple terms, the rich against the poor. Since
the government is not placing trust in the public and is attempting to control
too much of our society, our society is static in terms of growth and
development. The laws that regulate the wealth (production of goods and
services) of our nation prevent the increase of our wealth. Therefore, the
government’s involvement with the individual must be decreased so that people
can improve society.
I believe that the government must better its relationship with the individual in order to develop society. I suggest a system of perfect liberty or capitalism. The government must place more trust in the individual in terms of their capability to lead a society in the right direction. In human nature, people pursue self-interest. This self-interest allows for the invisible hand to guide our society in the right direction. Governments should allow individuals to own private property and for wages to be determined by the market. Thus, a laissez-faire system should be established. However, I do not suggest that governments completely stop all intervention. I realize restrictions such as the Navigations Acts help reduce poverty. A simple resolution is for the government to reduce the role it plays in the economy and maintain its role in providing justice in the society. More value must be placed on the individual and their ability. By the government providing the public with more freedom, they are increasing human capital. Therefore, I strongly believe that a government must restrain their control over the economy and pursue individualism.
